In this fourth – and final – text of this month, we will address poor timing, one of the factors that can contribute to ineffective communication in organizations.

Inadequate timing or poor timing is characterized by communicating information too early, too late or at inappropriate times, which can reduce (or even nullify) the effectiveness of the message and lead to lost opportunities or increased resistance to what is communicated.

This circumstance has consequences, particularly in decision-making. If there is no clear and timely communication (which presupposes adequate timing), decision-making processes can become prolonged and inefficient, which harms the organization's ability to respond quickly to market changes.

"Good timing is invisible. Bad timing sticks out a mile." - Tony Corinda

One possible solution is to invest in training employees in communication skills, including active listening, effective speaking and non-verbal communication. This investment empowers employees to acquire the skills necessary to communicate effectively in their various organizational contexts.

However, poor timing also stems from some psychological barriers, namely prejudices, assumptions and personal emotions, which can contribute to distorting the way messages are sent and received. Fear, distrust or lack of trust can also impede open communication and impact the choice of the best timings.

If attention is paid to choosing the best timings and an investment is made in communication skills, the likelihood of employees feeling heard and informed increases, thus their satisfaction and morale at work improve, which leads to greater involvement and fewer turnover rates.

Next month, we will start a set of articles under a new theme.

Author's note: this text expresses a personal perspective framed within some parameters, it is not a scientific article, of a medical, prescriptive or binding nature. It is also important to note that it was not intended to be an exhaustive analysis, in the future there will be new texts that will address other ways of looking at these same topics.
