Poor learning strategies
Topic of this content: How to improve poor learning strategies
Who might be interested in reading: people and professionals
During this month, we will address different dimensions of the problem that inadequate skills or knowledge represent, factors that affect the performance and achievements of individuals.
Four short texts will be published on this topic (1 for each week) and, in this first contribution, we seek to look at one of the factors that may contribute to this problem; poor learning strategies.
It is understood that poor learning strategies are ineffective learning methods or the absence of personalized learning strategies, both of which can hinder the acquisition of new knowledge or skills.
People benefit from identifying their learning preferences and adapting their strategies accordingly depending on different contexts and circumstances.
If this is not the case, there can be a negative impact on people's confidence and self-esteem, as they may find it difficult to keep up with professional demands or feel inadequate compared to colleagues.

A possible solution could be to seek feedback and also do some reflection. For example, people may ask for feedback on their progress from peers, mentors, supervisors or managers.
As for the reflection component, this can result from a stand-alone exercise of their own, but people can also reflect on this feedback mentioned above, using it to identify areas for improvement.
These two self-assessment processes can also help people recognize their progress and adjust their learning strategies in a more appropriate way.
However, it is important to note that different people have different characteristics. So, for people who have a fixed mindset or a belief that abilities are innate and unchangeable, this can prevent them from trying to learn new things because they may not believe that improvement is possible or achievable.
If it is possible to adopt the proposed solution and overcome the aforementioned mental obstacle, this could affect – positively – self-esteem and the way people interact with others, given that mastery of certain skills increases confidence in their abilities.
Author's note: this text expresses a personal perspective framed within some parameters, it is not a scientific article, of a medical, prescriptive or binding nature. It is also important to note that it was not intended to be an exhaustive analysis, in the future there will be new texts that will address other ways of looking at these same topics.
