In this third text on this month's topic (lack of clear goals), we will look at another factor that may contribute to this gap; poor goal-setting skills.
Lack of knowledge - or skills - to set goals effectively can result in vague and unattainable goals. Goals need to be defined in a specific, measurable, attainable, relevant way and with a clear deadline.
It is difficult to measure success without clear goals, and it is impossible to evaluate progress towards them, which can be highly demotivating. As a consequence, success becomes subjective and arbitrary, which makes it difficult to celebrate achievements or identify areas for improvement.
"If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal, not to people or things." —Albert Einstein
Therefore, it is crucial to set specific goals, using the SMART acronym, which translates into transforming each goal into something specific (for example, I want to lose weight), measurable (for example, I want to lose 5 kg), attainable or realistic (I have already signed up for a gym and started a healthy eating program), relevant (I want to feel better about my body and physical posture), with a clear deadline (I want to weigh 5 kg less in 2 months).
You can also set mini-goals, such as creating a weekly schedule for going to the gym or planning your meals for each week.
With the help of this small instrument, it is
possible to achieve better time management and better planning, because there
is now a more effective organization tool, gaining greater awareness of the
priorities that are established for daily routines.
Author's note: this text expresses a personal perspective framed within some parameters, it is not a scientific article, of a medical, prescriptive or binding nature. It is also important to note that it was not intended to be an exhaustive analysis, in the future there will be new texts that will address other ways of looking at these same topics.
