During this month, we will address different dimensions of the lack of self-discipline, which affects personal achievements. 5 short texts will be published on this topic (1 for each week) and, in this first contribution, we seek to look at one of the factors that may contribute to this gap; negative habits.
Examples of negative habits - or even bad habits - are procrastination, overindulgence in distractions (social media, TV, etc.), or poor time management, which can undermine efforts to maintain self-discipline and that people can accomplish the tasks they propose to do.
When this happens, one of the consequences is an increase in stress and/or anxiety levels, which result from an inability to manage time and responsibilities effectively, and can even lead to depression, as tasks accumulate and become more frightening.
"Most people don't have that willingness to break bad habits. They have a lot of excuses and they talk like victims." - Carlos Santana
A possible solution is to use reminders and/or schedule tasks and activities, taking advantage of calendars and reminder applications to control tasks and deadlines, because, as visual tools, they can help people keep goals in mind.
Still, it is necessary to face some challenges, namely poor time management, which consists of difficulty in managing this resource effectively, for example not being able to estimate the duration of a certain task, whether excessively or insufficiently.
Another challenge, associated with time management, is related to poor management of priorities, which are not always defined in the best way.
In other words, the difficulty in managing time and priorities effectively can lead to procrastination and a lack of self-discipline, facilitating the existence of undesirable deviations.
There is a symbiotic relationship between improved time management and self-discipline, which feed and strengthen each other, resulting in increased productivity, less stress and more free time for leisure or personal development activities, among many others.
Author's note: this text expresses a personal perspective framed within some parameters, it is not a scientific article, of a medical, prescriptive or binding nature. It is also important to note that it was not intended to be an exhaustive analysis, in the future there will be new texts that will address other ways of looking at these same topics.
