Lack of accountability

In this fourth text this month, we will address the lack of accountability, one of the factors that can contribute to a lack of self-discipline.
When people have difficulty taking full responsibility for their goals and the tasks necessary to achieve them, it is important to turn to someone external, to whom people feel responsible for presenting concrete results, someone who covers this responsibility, ensuring that people are consistently moving towards their own goals, completing all necessary steps towards that end.
Without this external accountability, whether from a mentor, a coach or a group of peers, which can be people with similar goals or roles, for example, a group that has common goals regarding a physical training program and that encourages each other, it can be easier to give in to short-term desires at the expense of long-term goals.
If there is no discipline to seek opportunities or to work towards their own goals, people can miss out on life-changing opportunities, which negatively impact their personal and professional growth.
"It is not only what we do, but also what we do not do, for which we are accountable." - Moliere
One possible solution is to find a viable support system that people feel comfortable with, surrounding themselves with other people who support their goals and/or who can offer encouragement, advice or accountability.
And there are multiple options, namely friends, family or a formal accountability group such as, for example, the case – already mentioned – of sports training, but it can also be a group of people with similar professional roles, who encourage each other, sharing experiences, challenges, problems, solutions and results.
If there is a lack of accountability, people may find it easier to deviate from disciplined behaviors, harming their own goals.
And, these disciplined behaviors are the basis for people to define, pursue and achieve goals, because they allow them to transform their aspirations into achievable plans and results, which leads to the fulfillment of the different personal and professional objectives that they set at each stage or moment of their lives.
Author's note: this text expresses a personal perspective framed within some parameters, it is not a scientific article, of a medical, prescriptive or binding nature. It is also important to note that it was not intended to be an exhaustive analysis, in the future there will be new texts that will address other ways of looking at these same topics.
