In this fifth – and last – text of this month, we will address the existence of information silos, one of the factors that can contribute to poor communication in an organizational context.
Information silos occur when information is not shared freely between departments or between different organizational levels, which creates barriers to collaboration and innovation.
Effective communication is crucial for collaboration and sharing ideas. And when communication fails, doesn't flow or is ineffective, innovation and creativity are stifled, which limits an organization's growth potential.
"The word 'silo' does not just refer to a physical structure or organization (such as a department). It can also be a state of mind. Silos exist in structures. But they exist in our minds and social groups too. Silos breed tribalism. But they can also go hand in hand with tunnel vision." - Gillian Tett, The Silo Effect: The Peril of Expertise and the Promise of Breaking Down Barriers
A possible solution is to encourage open dialogue, that is, the creation of a culture characterized, essentially, by openness to dialogue and feedback. The primary purpose is to convey to employees that their opinions are valued and important for the success of the organization as a whole.
Proactive attention is needed for behaviors that configure (or promote) organizational silos, because their existence (departmentally or hierarchically), in an organizational context, can restrict the flow of information, which creates bottlenecks and misalignments in understanding it.
When there are open communication channels, which encourage the sharing of ideas and collaboration, an environment is promoted where innovation has ample space to thrive, which benefits each employee and also the organization in collective terms.
Next month, we will start a set of articles
under a new theme.
Author's note: this text expresses a personal perspective framed within some parameters, it is not a scientific article, of a medical, prescriptive or binding nature. It is also important to note that it was not intended to be an exhaustive analysis, in the future there will be new texts that will address other ways of looking at these same topics.
