During this month, we will address different dimensions of how overcommitment affects personal achievements. 4 texts will be published on this topic (1 per week) and, in this first contribution, we seek to look at one of the factors that may contribute to this excess; high aspirations and expectations.

People with ambitious goals may overcommit themselves in an attempt to achieve success quickly or in response to the high expectations they set for themselves or others have for them.

These circumstances can lead to increased stress, because they involve juggling many commitments, which can trigger chronic stress, leading to serious implications for health, including anxiety, depression and burnout.

"The expectations of life depend upon diligence; the mechanic, who wants to perfect his work, must first sharpen his tools." - Confucius

One possible solution is to set realistic expectations. It is important to be aware of your capabilities and to set realistic expectations for yourself and others. Overestimating what you can achieve in a given period of time can lead to overcommitment.

Still, pay special attention to the temptation to set unrealistic expectations for yourself or try to live up to the excessive expectations of others, in order to avoid excessive commitment, because this active vigilance will have positive impacts on your mental health.

Without the constant stress of juggling many commitments, people reduce their levels of anxiety and depression, which contributes to a healthier and happier mental state.
