In this fifth – and last – text of this month, we will address attachment to outcome, one of the factors that can contribute to the fear of failure.
Attachment to outcome, in the context of this text, is defined as an excessive attachment to the results that are obtained, to the detriment of greater attention to the learning and growth process that leads to these results.
This approach can enhance a perspective according to which everything that does not correspond to a specific result is seen as a failure.
As a consequence, limitations to personal and professional growth can be generated, because, by avoiding risks and challenges for fear of undesirable results, people erect barriers to opportunities for learning and evolution, which can cause stagnation in personal development and progress in the professional career.
"Attachment is the great fabricator of illusions; reality can be attained only by someone who is detached." - Simone Weil
A possible solution could be to reformulate the concept of failure, seeking to view an unwanted result as a learning opportunity and not as a frustrating, insurmountable setback or even as a synonym for lack of capacity.
It is important to understand that most successful people in any field have also experienced unwanted results or even failures, but they used these moments as a springboard to achieve the success they sought.
Still, some people may need to overcome a tendency towards perfectionism, something that can lead them to a permanent desire to do everything perfectly, developing fears of making mistakes.
When patterns like this are present, people avoid trying new things or choose not to take risks that could lead to failure. In this case, it is important to return to the possible solution already mentioned, because, if people can reformulate the concept of failure, then it becomes easier to understand that it can also lead to growth and learning, that is, failure, growth and learning go hand in hand.
When it becomes possible to do this inner work of reformulation, greater resilience is acquired, because the sometimes-paralyzing fear of failure is overcome and people gain greater capacity to recover from setbacks, seeing them as opportunities for success, learning and growth rather than catastrophic events.
And a consistently resilient attitude promotes a constructive mindset, within which challenges are welcome, contributing to accelerating personal growth.
Next month, we will begin a set of articles under a new theme.
Author's note: this text expresses a personal perspective framed within some parameters, it is not a scientific article, of a medical, prescriptive or binding nature. It is also important to note that it was not intended to be an exhaustive analysis, in the future there will be new texts that will address other ways of looking at these same topics.
