Conscious and unconscious
The conscious part of our brain processes between 0.0005% and, in the best-case scenario, a maximum of 5% of reality, everything else (that is, between 95% and 99.9995%) is processed at the unconscious level and this processing can happen simultaneously at the conscious and subconscious levels.
"Until you turn the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate." - Carl Jung
Self-awareness and self-responsibility
We are all deeply influenced by our instincts, environments, contexts or circumstances and by our experiences, from the moment we are born and throughout our lives.
When we better understand these interactions at the level of our subconscious and transform them into conscious information, we stop allowing our own brain to tell us biased stories about reality and we begin to hold greater responsibility for the choices and decisions we make in our lives.
"I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become." - Carl Jung
Creating good habits is essential
One of the rules of neuroplasticity tells us that the brain works in a way that makes us excellent at what we repeat and what we focus on.
Without repetition and focus on anything, there is no excellence, because the brain does not optimize the necessary connections between neurons and this generates forgetfulness, except in the case of basic physical movements, such as walking or riding a bike for example, because the brain seeks to save energy and gradually cleans up everything that is not used frequently.
On the other hand, it doesn't matter whether what we repeat or what we focus on is positive or negative for us, the brain doesn't make that distinction, it simply becomes as efficient as possible at doing what we choose to repeat or focus on.
Therefore, we should choose to repeat and focus on what is positive for us, otherwise we become excellent at doing what is negative for us.
"People do not decide their futures, they decide their habits and their habits decide their futures." - F. M. Alexander
How to make your brain your best and most powerful ally
- The Human Behavioral Model
- How to manage and switch, in a healthy and conscious way, between the different operating systems of our brain
- The anatomy and "mechanics" of our brain
- How to manage our neurochemicals, what are the daily "doses" of healthy chemicals we need to stimulate and how to do it
- How to stimulate neurogenesis (creation of new cells in the brain, which can be neurons, but also other types of cells)
- How to make the most of neuroplasticity (our ability to learn, adapt and change)
- What are the precautions for the environments or contexts around us (enriched environments, impoverished environments and toxic environments) and how does this influence the health of our brain?
- What are our main cognitive biases, how to get around them or not be manipulated by them
- How our limiting beliefs are formed, how we create frameworks and perspectives about the reality to which we are exposed
- How our compensation mechanisms work
- Be careful with the projections we make, how they impact our interactions with others and vice versa
- How to manage our ego healthily
- How to identify the origin and better manage our behaviors, thoughts and emotions, as well as traumas, fears, insecurities and frustrations
- Structural and determinant differences between a survival brain and an empowered brain
